i don't like Dupe status at all (would prefer just patching all foreign-key links within the db, like faves) -- but there would be complexity around conversations in comments, & voting

yeah, that could be. I've often thought that Dupe should be hidden by default and treated as a redirect if you go right to the URL (unless you add a query param - like Wikipedia!)
